Lightning Damage Inside

Written by admin on August 11, 2010 – 16:09

In a previous post, Lightning Damage to Ethernet RJ45, I wrote about how lightning had damaged an outside 900MHZ radio, an RJ45 and an ethernet cable. Again, I have replaced some equipment that had been damaged by lightning. This time, the damage is more extensive.

As you can see below, the surge protector was also hit with the damage.

In the photo of the Surge Protector, you can also see where it looks like a power supply or a device had been plugged in when lightning struck.

Here is the SDA that was plugged into that outlet. You can see the damage that was done inside to the SDA as it struck.

Even the Cat5 cable going in and the one going out of the SDA were damaged.

Windows Live – Mail – Gmail Settings

Written by admin on August 11, 2010 – 11:20

Gmail is a great tool for email. But, what if you use an email client like Windows Live Mail

Enable POP in Gmail

Configure your client to match the settings below

Incoming Mail (POP3) Server – requires SSL:
pop.gmail.com
Use SSL: Yes
Port: 995

Outgoing Mail (SMTP) Server – requires TLS or SSL:
smtp.gmail.com (use authentication)
Use Authentication: Yes
Port for TLS/STARTTLS: 587
Port for SSL: 465

Account Name: your full email address (including @gmail.com or @your_domain.com)
Email Address: your email address (username@gmail.com or username@your_domain.com)
Password: your Gmail password

Make sure you’ve opted not to leave messages on the server – that is - unless you’re using recent mode to download mail to multiple clients.

If your client does not support SMTP authentication, you will not be able to send mail through your client using your Gmail address.

Also, if you’re having trouble sending mail but you’ve confirmed that encryption is active for SMTP in your mail client, try to configure your SMTP server on a different port: 465 or 587.

Be sure to click Save Changes when you’re done.
