As the War of the browsers moves on at the end of 2008, big plans are in store for 2009 for IE8 and Google’s Chrome. For what seems normal for Microsoft, they have once again put a delay on IE8.

According to the MS Blog, the release of the final candidate of IE8 has been delayed now until 2009. An exact date is unknown.

We will release one more public update of IE8 in the first quarter of 2009, and then follow that up with the final release.

No surprise there eh?

The call to action now for the technical community is to download beta 2 (if you haven’t already) and let us know about your experience. Next, please prepare for final testing with public update so you can let us know – quickly, loudly, and clearly – if you find absolutely critical issues with it before the release of the final product.

So why the sudden change? Could it be because they did not anticipate the release of Google’s Chrome and the strength it is gaining? Not only that, but this comes around the same time that Google Debates on pulling one of the best moves I have seen them do.

The Times (UK) Reports

Speaking to The Times, Sundar Pichai, Google Vice President, Product Management, revealed that Chrome will be ready to come out of “beta” testing by January, and that the search giant was looking at ways to make Chrome the browser of choice for the everyday user.

“We will probably do distribution deals,” he said, adding, “we could work with an OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) and have them ship computers with Chrome pre-installed.”

He added that versions of Chrome should also be available of computers using Macintosh or Linux software in the first half of next year, allowing the browser to be used on almost 99 per cent of computers worldwide.

This could be good for Google’s Chrome. Maybe this is the incentive that Microsoft also needs to get their act together and release a good browser. If things keep up, they could get beat by their own game at this rate.
