Googlebot Meta Tags

Besides the keyword and description meta tags being the most important ones, there are some meta tags that are proprietary to Google’sOpens in a new Window own Googlebot. According to GoogleOpens in a new Window, the  tags that would apply specifically to Google’sOpens in a new Window Googlebot are the ones that have name="googlebot" in the meta tag.

There are many reasons not to have a Search Engine cache a page. If it is copyrighted, if it contains private information that you do not want displayed from a search engine, or for any other reason you do not want the page crawled by a search engine, you can add the following code to the meta tags of a page and it will keep the page from being indexed:

<META NAME="ROBOTS" CONTENT="NOINDEX, NOFOLLOW">

If you would like specifically to keep Google Opens in a new Window from indexing the page, but allow other Search Engines to index it, you can place the following meta tags in your headers of the page:

<META NAME="GOOGLEBOT" CONTENT="NOINDEX, NOFOLLOW">

On the other hand, if you would like the robots to index the file, but not follow the links on the page, you can use this code.

Google a Terrorist Threat?

Today while readling SlashdotOpens in a new Window, I had to stop and re read an article I saw. Google Terror ThreatOpens in a new Window mentions an article that is found on CNN - India warns: Google terror threatOpens in a new Window.

From this article it states, "Indian President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam expressed concern Saturday about a free mapping program from Google Inc., warning it could help terrorists by providing satellite photos of potential targets."

The article discusses how Google EarthOpens in a new Window may be used to help terrorits by allowing people to access areas of developing countries via sattelite images. Also, it goes on to state:  "The governments of South Korea and Thailand and lawmakers in the Netherlands have expressed similar concerns."

Although Google MapsOpens in a new Window and Google EarthOpens in a new Window use information already available to the public, and the images are a couple years old, I had to stop and wonder why Google is being singled out for this.

MapQuestOpens in a new Window, MapBlasterOpens in a new Window, MS Streets and TripsOpens in a new Window, Yahoo! MapsOpens in a new Window, TerraserverOpens in a new Window, Delorme Street AtlasOpens in a new Window and 3-D QuadsOpens in a new Window, and even TigerOpens in a new Window have this information as well. Many of these give detailed information how to get to and from locations by giving specific directions and not just satellite images. These programs have been around for years.

And, on a side note, what about GPS’s?

I do not quite understand why Google EarthOpens in a new Window  was singled out for this. There are all sorts of services such as this which have been around for years and also been public. Also, most of these satellit images are going to be a couple of years old, but many programs with specific directions are going to be more up to date than that.

I think it is about time to start handing out Cluepons. Here’s your sign…
